Cruising to Catalina: A Day in Paradise

IMG_0675Our DayTripper Tour to the island of Catalina last Saturday, September 16th, was a series of postcard scenes all day long.

On the ride north, we talked about the 7000-year history of Santa Catalina Island, from the original indigenous people to the times of pirates and smugglers and then all the way to the Chicago Cubs.  With Tino at the wheel, our luxury coach with 51 passengers pulled up at Newport Harbor a few minutes ahead of schedule, easily allowing everyone to get coffee, find a bakery and hit the restrooms before boarding the Catalina Flyer for the 75-minute cruise to the picture perfect town of Avalon.  Morning clouds gave way to a glorious sunny day, the temperature was nearly perfect and folks were snapping photos of dolphins racing along next to us.  The trip seemed to fly by.

Once on the island, our passengers headed off for their own adventures.  Some caught tours to the rugged interior to check out the bison and wild boars while others signed up to see the Botanical Gardens or take a glass bottom boat ride.  Some of our folks rented golf carts in town while others just strolled around Avalon, checking out the Catalina museum and then selecting one of many water view restaurants for lunch and a margarita.

IMG_0676We all met back on Dock #3 in the late afternoon and boarded the 4:30pm Catalina Flyer back to the mainland for what proved to be a very smooth ride. Tino greeted everyone with cold bottles of water and a light snack.  There was lots of buzz on board our coach heading home as old and new friends traded stories of how they had spent their day.  We even had an all-in spontaneous singing of the “Gilligan’s Island” theme song, though no one missed the getting stranded part of that story.

Whether they were a first timer with DayTripper Tours or someone on her 50th trip (true!), we all had a wonderful time together cruising Catalina.  Maybe you can join us next time!  We’d love to have you!
