DAY 1
Northbound Beginnings & California Heritage
This morning we leave behind the familiar pace of San Diego as the promise of mountain grandeur and holiday adventure beckons. Midday brings a stop at the lively Grand Central Market in Los Angeles, a landmark gathering place since 1917. Here, under the glow of neon signs and the aroma of sizzling global cuisines, you'll enjoy lunch on your own, from classic deli sandwiches to authentic Mexican street food to something new from a trendy artisanal vendor.
After lunch, step into the spirit of the American West at the Autry Museum, where cowboy culture, Native traditions, and Western art converge. Each gallery invite us to imagine the frontier days-an era of pioneers, explorers, and untamed landscapes. This artistic journey acts as a prologue to our adventure, for just ahead lies Yosemite, where the magnificence rises like a living canvas.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Bakersfield, a gateway city where the Central Valley meets the Sierra Nevada. Our overnight stay awaits at the Hilton Garden Inn, offering a restful retreat after a day of discovery. This evening, gather for a hearty included dinner at the ever-popular Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, known for its annual nostalgic holiday decorations. Amid twinkling lights, country-style fare, and the familiar crackle of a welcoming hearth, we'll share our first meal together, setting a warm and festive tone for the days ahead.
Day 2
Scandinavian Charm & Sierra Pines
After breakfast at the hotel, we continue our northbound journey, pausing late morning in the quaint town of Kingsburg, California. Once a railroad hub, Kingsburg became known as the "Swedish Village" when Scandinavian settlers left their mark on its streetscape. Today, the town embraces its heritage with gabled storefronts, murals, and even a whimsical water tower painted like a giant Swedish coffee pot. Browse specialty shops, discover locally made treasures, and enjoy lunch at your leisure in this charming locale.
This afternoon, the scenery begins to shift as we ascend into the Sierra Nevada foothills, trading farmland for forests. By day's end we arrive in Fish Camp, a tiny mountain hamlet just outside Yosemite's southern gate, and check in for two nights at the majestic Tenaya Lodge. Nestled among tall pines, this grand resort greets the season with a dazzling Christmas tree, dazzling lights, and the welcoming glow of its towering stone fireplace. Tonight, we gather for an included dinner at the lodge, where the aroma of hearty fare, the sparkle of holiday décor, and the warmth of the hearth bring us together.
Day 3
Yosemite's Living Masterpiece
After a hearty mountain breakfast at the lodge, set out for a day devoted to the wonders of Yosemite National Park. The first glimpse of the valley feels like stepping into a natural cathedral, where granite walls rise like towers and waterfalls tumble in timeless rhythm. This morning, a guided two-hour Valley Floor Tour led by a knowledgeable park ranger brings the landscape into vivid focus, from the soaring cliffs of El Capitan to the misty spray of Bridalveil Fall.
Following our tour, we gather for an included lunch at the Ahwahnee Hotel-a masterpiece of rustic elegance whose soaring beams, massive stone hearths, and panoramic windows frame Yosemite's splendor with unmatched splendor. In December, the hotel takes on a festive glow, its great hall adorned with holiday greenery and roaring fires that echo the timeless spirit of the season.
The afternoon invites quieter exploration. Stroll along the boardwalk trail leading toward Yosemite Falls, where the air is crisp and meadows may glisten with frost or a dusting of snow. Leisurely wander through Yosemite Village, where shops, exhibits, and pathways invite discovery. The free park shuttle also makes it easy to visit the Ansel Adams Gallery, where the photographer's iconic black-and-white images of Yosemite seem to capture not only its form but its soul.
As the day winds down, return to the warmth and comfort of Tenaya Lodge, carrying with us the awe of a living masterpiece made even more magical by the quiet stillness of winter.
Day 4
A Leisurely Farewell to Yosemite & Christmas Eve at Wonder Valley
The morning is yours to savor at Tenaya Lodge-perhaps a lingering breakfast, a quiet walk among the pines, or simply time to relax. After an included lunch at the lodge, bid farewell to the High Sierra and descend into the oak-dotted foothills of California's Central Valley.
By afternoon, we arrive at Wonder Valley Ranch Resort, where rustic beauty is enhanced by the joy of the holiday season. The welcoming staff will host a special Christmas Eve celebration, complete with a festive dinner and lively evening entertainment.
Although many of us began this journey as strangers, the shared experiences of the past few days have turned fellow travelers into friends. Tonight, as we gather in the warmth of Wonder Valley, it feels very much like a DayTripper family Christmas-a holiday shared not only with the ranch's gracious hosts, but with one another. Surrounded by laughter, music, and the glow of the season, we step fully into the spirit of the season.
Day 5
A DayTripper Family Christmas at Wonder Valley
Christmas morning dawns gently at Wonder Valley Ranch, where the crisp country air and festive touches set the tone for a day of gleeful celebration. After breakfast, the pace slows to holiday leisure-time to stroll the grounds, sip a warm cup of cocoa, or simply soak in the serenity of this rustic retreat.
Throughout the day, participate in a variety of holiday activities to delight and entertain. You might join in Christmas crafts such as wreath making or gingerbread houses, decorate cookies, or share in the laughter of a white elephant gift exchange. Seasonal fun may also include festive games, a holiday scavenger hunt, or cozy moments around the fireplace or campfire with s'mores, hot cocoa, and cider. For those seeking a picture-perfect keepsake, the holiday photo booth is always a favorite. And if weather permits, the highlight may be a horse-drawn hayride or festive cart ride through the property, complete with a special surprise holiday stop along the way.
Later, we come together once again for a hearty Christmas dinner at the ranch, where warm hospitality and a spirit of togetherness turn the meal itself into a celebration.
Day 6
Farewell to Wonder Valley & Homeward Bound
Our adventure concludes with one final gathering at Wonder Valley Ranch-a special surprise morning activity planned by our gracious hosts to send us off with smiles and holiday cheer. Afterward, we bid farewell to the ranch's peaceful foothills and begin our journey south.
We'll stop in Bakersfield for a delicious lunch, one last chance to share stories and laughter before the road carries us home. By evening, we return to San Diego with full hearts, new friends, and the fondest memories of Yuletide in Yosemite and a Wonder Valley Christmas.
