Betty Harvey – Operations Manager
Betty is the Tour Operations Manager at DayTripper Tours and has been with the company since 2004. She is responsible for overseeing the operations of all tours and her day-to-day tasks include managing payment deadlines and coordinating contracts with service provider, motor coach companies, tour directors, restaurants, hotels, theaters, attractions and more! Born and raised in Tijuana, Betty was raised to have a strong work ethic and sense of family. She always loved adventure, which led to her study of travel at the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California, where she obtained a degree in Tourism. After working in everything related to tourism in Tijuana, including the airport, hotels and travel agencies, an opportunity for work in the U.S. came up with the Baja Inn Tour Operator. The company opened a travel agency in Chula Vista so she commuted every day from TJ to Chula Vista. After a couple of years, another opportunity came through at Express Holidays, a Mexico wholesale tour operator that sells Mexico vacation packages to travel agents. In 1998, Betty married her husband Andre and moved to the U.S. When Betty is not in the office, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their 12-yr-old son, Marcellus.
Karen Achtenhagen – Product Development Manager
Karen has been with DayTripper Tours since February of 2011 and is currently serving as the Product Development Manager. She and her team plan and develop all the fabulous excursions offered by our company. Karen has called San Diego home for most of her life, and has worked in the hospitality industry for over 25 years. Her career started in the Transportation industry at Cloud 9 Shuttle’s Sales Office, working with meeting planners, tour operators and corporate clients. During this time, she pursued her designation as a Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) which she still maintains. After almost a decade at Cloud 9 Shuttle, Karen left the industry for a short period of time working in the High Tech Industry as an Office & Facilities Manager of a “Start Up” company, still using her meeting planning skills among many others. After six years away, the passion to continue in the Hospitality Industry won, and she returned as a Senior Operations Manager for one of the local Destination Management Companies, Arrangements Unlimited. As the economy started to slide in the hospitality industry, she moved on to Tour Planning at DayTripper Tours. In addition, she operates her own company, KLA Enterprises, in which she plans and coordinates transportation for several Half Marathons in the area and finally she plays a major role as an independent contractor to National University, running their large commencement services every year.
Chrissy Allen – Reservations Manager
Chrissy joined the DayTripper Tours Reservations Department in September of 2012, and was promoted to Reservations Manager in November of 2014. She also plays an active role as the trainer for DayTripper Tours, creating workshops and presenting at staff meetings. Chrissy has a passion for customer service and loves watching clients enjoy our tours. Working both in the office and “on the bus” as a Tour Director has allowed her to put faces with names, and she loves getting to know the clients both on the phone and in person. “I feel very lucky to be working in a job that brings others so much joy.”
Chrissy was born and raised right here in San Diego, and after spending four years in both Arizona and Wisconsin, she has moved back home to stay. Prior to joining the DayTripper staff, Chrissy spent a large part of her adult life as a corporate trainer. Chrissy’s first love and biggest passion is music. Chrissy began singing at the age of 3 years old, and began playing piano at age 5. After years of shows with San Diego Junior Theatre and attending O’Farrell School of Creative and Performing Arts, Chrissy moved away from stage, working in both church and cover bands spanning all types of music. Currently Chrissy can be found each and every Sunday morning at St. Columba church where she plays with the praise band, Spiritus, who released their first CD in December 2014 (www.SoulCalMusic.com).
Melissa LaFara – Product Development Coordinator
Mel joined the DayTripper Tours team in March 2012 as a part time reservations agent before being promoted to Operations and then to Product Development. Thriving most on the creative team, Mel works with Karen and Whitnie to plan out each bi-monthly catalog. By finding places and events of interest, figuring out the potential tour’s logistics, making reservations, loading tours in our customized system, creating itineraries and maps, etc., she helps the team build each tour from the ground up.
Born and raised in Florida, after attending University of Florida, Mel moved to San Diego in 2000. Before joining the DayTripper team, she owned an internationally known vintage clothing business on eBay for six years and ran an independent record store for nine years. Coming from a musical background, her main passion is singing and songwriting. Starting as a young child she is a trained multi-instrumentalist in bass guitar, piano, viola, clarinet, oboe, flute, drums and other percussion. She currently plays in two musical outfits, Wild Honey and The Lumps, as the lead vocalist and bass guitar player.
Amanda Matti – Marketing Coordinator
Amanda joined DayTripper Tours as the Marketing Coordinator in June of 2013. She served six years in the United States Navy, including a 2005 deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following her separation from the military, she returned to the Middle East as a journalist working as a staff writer for an Amman, Jordan based magazine covering the July 2006 Israel-Lebanon War.
Amanda is the author of A Foreign Affair (W & B Publishers, October 2016), a memoir chronicling her time serving in Iraq and how she met her husband, a Baghdad native. A Foreign Affair is currently available at Amazon.com.
Whitnie Andrews – Product Development Coordinator
Whitnie is the most recent addition to the Product Development team, joining the company in September 2015. She works alongside Karen, Mel and Crystal to plan and develop the various tours offered here at DayTripper Tours. Whitnie is originally from a small town in Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison with a degree in Communications in 2014. Whitnie is now attending SDSU to obtain the Meeting and Event Planning Certificate, to enhance her long term goals of becoming an Event Planner.
Trish Murillo – Reservations Agent
Trish has resided in Santee, CA for much of her life and has a background in Clinical Social Work and Medical Sales Management. In her free time, she enjoys spending quality time with family & friends. Trish herself excitingly anticipates traveling with DayTripper Tours on many future excursions!
Breeanna Allen – Operations Assistant
Breeanna Allen joined the team in late November 2015, and was recently made Operations Assistant, although still helps out with Marketing and Reservations.
When Breeanna is not working at DayTripper, she works hard as a full-time second year student at the University of California at San Diego, and is planning to major in Sociology. Breeanna is an accomplished musician as a singer, and is proudly part of UCSD’s premiere acapella performance groups, The Tritones, performing all over San Diego and Southern California.
In her spare time Breeanna enjoys time with her friends and family, Mom, Dad, brother Braden – age 9, and sister Jessie, age 11
